No. buymugold is not a sequel in the strictest of terMU but a continuation of the storyline. Not only does buymugold use a different class and skill system, much has changed in the world of Norrath in the last 500 years, including the death of your EQLive character. But, there are implemented heritage element in buymugold, allowing new characters to carry on the name and gain an heirloom relative to their EQLive character(s). There are also heritage quests available that you can do to obtain items from the original Everquest game. A few examples of this are the Flowing Black Silk Sash, Dwarven Work Boots, or the Bone Bladed Claymore.
